A proposal to ban the use of powdered milk in the manufacture of cheese can have negative consequences for producers and the industry as a whole. This writes RIA “Novosti” with reference to press Secretary of the National Union of milk producers (Soyuzmoloko) Mary Rebit.
“Such drastic measures will lead to extremely negative changes in the whole category of processed cheese manufactured using milk powder as an essential source of protein and lactose,” said Rebit.
The representative of the Soyuzmoloko said that “developed over the years the legislative framework establishes the use of this ingredient”.
“Milk is a totally natural product produced exclusively by the natural drying of pasteurized milk, carries no risk for the consumer and has the same properties as raw milk,” recalled Rebit.
According to a spokesperson, the development of drying production and market of processed cheese would additionally solve the problem with the resulting surplus of milk. “Therefore, the Board Soyuzmoloko believes such an initiative is inappropriate and detrimental to Russian enterprises”, — said Rebit.
Rebit also added that Soyuzmoloko supports the desire of the Ministry of agriculture to solve the problem of counterfeiting in the milk market. “However, it is worth emphasizing that the use of vegetable fats in dairy products is prohibited by law today, its use is only allowed in milk products”, she concluded.
Earlier it was reported that the Ministry of agriculture of Russia proposed to prohibit the production and sale of cheese not made from milk. In particular, this product must contain in its composition no more than half of vegetable fats. Otherwise, it’s not a cheese and cheese-like product. The Ministry believes that the reduction in the use of milk production exerts negative effects on the agricultural sector.
