“Fantastically beautiful” photo posted on his Instagram, Russian cosmonaut Anton shkaplerov. The photo was taken from earth orbit. It depicts the Aral sea. The picture shows a “catastrophically low” now the water level in the sea. In the description of the photo cosmonaut expressed about it a regret.
#Aralskoe – the former endorheic salt lake located on the border of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Until the 1960s, it was considered the fourth largest lake in the world, but today, the sea levels are catastrophically low… And I was not mistaken, calling the Aral sea lake. To the sea it is traditionally attributed due to the large size, as the neighboring Caspian. They both are remnants of an ancient ocean. • The #AralSea from space. Formerly one of the four largest lakes in the world, the Aral Sea has been steadily shrinking since the 1960s.
Located in Kazakhstan, the Aral sea because of the large size is called a sea, but in reality it is a brackish lake. Up to 60-ies of the last century, the pond was considered the fourth largest lake. Then the water level in the Aral sea has started to fall sharply, and the sea has significantly decreased in size.
