Cigars, champagne, and pressure on the media: Netanyahu came under suspicion

Israeli law enforcement agencies have announced they have evidence that the Prime Minister was involved in corruption schemes. The Benjamin Netanyahu called these arguments are baseless and said on national television that the suspicions about him “over nothing”. Among the accusations against Netanyahu are, in particular, exerting pressure on the media, bribery, lobbying for the interests of others. According to local reports, in connection with these assumptions, Netanyahu has interrogated seven times.

A decision on formal charges and initiate proceedings should take the Israeli General Prosecutor’s office, but even if that happens, Netanyahu will have to automatically resign. The Prime Minister himself has declared that is not going to do that. The next parliamentary elections will take place in November 2019, at the moment the Prime Minister is confident that this situation will not affect his political positions.

In the list of charges appears that Netanyahu allegedly received gifts worth more than a million shekels from Hollywood producer Arnon Milchen, in exchange for which the Prime Minister backed him in the promotion business, and also began to promote so-called “law Milena”, which provided for the exemption of the Israelites who have returned for permanent residence to the homeland from abroad. However, the document was not adopted because of objections by the Ministry of Finance. It is assumed that the media Mogul also gave the policy of cigars and champagne, for which Netanyahu secured his U.S. visa, the statement made by myself Milchan.

According to a second prosecution, if Netanyahu pushed Israeli newspaper “Yediot Aharonot” (“Latest news”), so that the newspaper covered the activities of the authorities only in a positive way. According to the agreement in exchange for loyalty, the government (if you believe the accusations) promised to obstruct the direct competitors of Newspapers.

“MK” contacted representatives of the Israel police, but there no comment on this matter refused.

Netanyahu’s lawyer Amit Hadad called the accusations fabricated and stated that according to the facts, the head of the government has never acted in the interests of Melcena. Haddad called the recommendations of the police are politically motivated and criticized the opponent for Netanyahu, former Finance Minister Yair Lapid, who is allegedly a witness “deals” Prime Minister and Melcena.

The members of the government coalition expressed their support for the Prime Minister. As reported “Interfax”, the head of the coalition David Amsalem said that the charges are nothing new: “the Goal was marked two years ago. Opponents of Netanyahu allowed dozens of arrows, hoping that one of them will hit, did everything possible to achieve your goal.” At the same time, the opposition reacted quite differently, the party “the Zionist camp” called on the Prime Minister to resign immediately.

Netanyahu is not the first Israeli leader who had to deal with allegations of certain improper actions. Earlier against the former Prime Minister of Israel, Olmert was convicted, on which he in 2016, was sentenced to 19 months. 70-year-old Ehud Olmert was charged with corruption, obstruction of justice. And in 2011, ex-President Moshe Katsav received a seven-year term for rape.
