Asteroid 1I/Omoloi, the only known interstellar object in the Solar system, attracted the attention of scientists not only for its origin and unusual elongated shape, but also quite chaotic rotation. In the new study, astrophysicists from the United Kingdom, Czech Republic and Serbia found that the cause of this rotation is an ancient collision with another space object.

The authors of the new papers suggest that the collision occurred billions of years ago, and the rotation of the asteroid is then gradually slows down, however “exactly” the asteroid will begin to fly not less than another billion years, if his path appears a new obstacle.
The study was published in the journal Nature Astronomy.
Outdoor 19 October last year, the asteroid became the first and to date the only known interstellar space object. Unlike other 750 thousand open scientists of asteroids and comets, 1I/Omwamwi arrived in the Solar system from another star, and in the future, in all likelihood, again will leave. The letter ” I ” in the designation was introduced for the first time and stands for “interstellar” (interstellar), and the word “Omwamwi” can be roughly translated from the Hawaiian language as “a messenger arrived first from afar.” According to one version, does not break down during interstellar flights to the asteroid allowed covering the layer of organic matter.
The outer body seemed to specialists is quite amazing to such an extent that some of them decided to check whether it is a spacecraft created by aliens. However, no evidence for this assumption, scientists working under the project Breakthrough Listen, could not be found — it turned out that the space object is not the source of any unusual radio signals.
