A scandal broke out between Croatia and Ukraine over the “upgraded” MiG-21. It turned out that the aircraft beyond repair which Zagreb was paid to Kiev around 22 million dollars, absolutely unfit for use. The Croatian authorities intend to replace the jets are OK, or get your money back, the newspaper Jutarnji list, citing sources in the Ministry of defence.
Croatia is going to return four MiG-21 Ukraine and instead to demand good repair under the state guarantee. According to the publication, last week the Ministry of defense of the Balkan Republic sent the Ukrainian partners the appropriate service note.
A contract to repair aircraft assumed that the fighters will last another 10 years, until 2023, but after a couple of years of the Croatian air force recognized the car unfit for flight. They begin to have problems with navigation equipment and oil leaks. At the same time one of the machines failed engine in the air, and only thanks to successful actions of Croatian pilot managed to avoid disaster.
In 2014, the Ukrainian state company “UkrSpetsExport” repaired seven Croatian MiG-21. In addition, she sold the Zagreb five such machines, which, according to the newspaper, until 1998 was in the air force of Bulgaria. “UkrSpetsExport” bought MiGs for parts, and then broke the numbers on the jets, repainted them and sold under the guise of “deeply upgraded equipment”.
The Minister of defence of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak during a visit to Zagreb in January, acknowledged that the agreement was “not quite done” and promised to conduct a detailed investigation of poor maintenance of the MiG-21. While the Croatian side paid to Kiev for this contract is 22 million dollars.
