In the center of Samarkand, near the tomb of Tamerlane, built a grandiose mausoleum of the first President among the heads of the Soviet republics, Islam Karimov, who for 26 years with an iron hand ruled Uzbekistan until his death in September 2016.
The building of dwell almost 8 metres was erected over the grave of President Islam Karimov, whose tombstone is made of white onyx. Its walls are decorated with precious stones and gilding, and the lower part lined with green onyx. “This sacred place is the eternal home of the First President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the great statesman and political figure, dear and beloved son of the Uzbek people, Islam Karimov”, – reads the inscription on a marble slab at the entrance, engraved in English and Uzbek languages. In the design and construction of the mausoleum, the great attention was paid to the combination of its design with the ancient mosque of Hazret-Hyzr, which is included in the world heritage of UNESCO. In particular, the top of a building located a ribbed dome with ceramic tiles and terracotta, as in the dome of the mosque.
In addition, on the territory of the memorial complex is set ayvan terrace with a flat surface, supported by columns, the outputs of which are engraved the inscriptions from the Koran. According to media reports, the construction of the mausoleum was brought about 2 thousand workers, craftsmen from India, artisans from all regions of the country and even cadets from military educational institutions. One of the project curators was the youngest daughter Lola Karimova.
At the end of January last year, the new head of state signed a decree to perpetuate the memory of the first President: every year on 30 January to celebrate his birthday, September 2 — the day of death.
Since then, every year the country has erected monuments to the former President. This year it was placed in the city of Karshi. And August 31, 2017, a monument erected in Tashkent in front of the residence of the former head of state at the meeting. The application form for participation in competition were submitted by about 60 authors from 7 countries, but the winner was the sculptor Ilkhom Jabbarov – the author of the monument to Amir Temur in Uzbekistan.
Despite the large number of various monuments dedicated to Karimov, it is possible to pay attention to the fact that local media do not report on the merits of the first head of state to the people, but rather replicate the way his father, grandfather and friend. His youngest daughter, Lola Karimova has published on his page in Facebook a touching letter, which acknowledges that the father of her dreams, and her daughter Safiya wants to visit the grave of his grandfather. It is noteworthy that on the same day there was another important event that perhaps would have remained unnoticed were it not dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the first President of Uzbekistan. His grandson Islam Karimov Jr. asked the UK for political asylum. He explained that his mother Gulnara is still in prison on corruption charges. According to Genprokuratury Ukraine, Gulnara Karimova caused the state damages in the amount of about two billion dollars.
