An unexpected way of dealing with mosquitoes: they can be intimidating


Scientists from the University of Washington, found that mosquitoes remember the smell potentially dangerous prey and avoid it. According to scientists, this observation will help to develop new tools to combat mosquito bites.

According to experts, mosquitoes choose who to bite, not randomly. The majority of mosquitoes “specializiruetsya” on certain vertebrate species and gives preference to specific individuals. From the understanding of “benchmarks” by which the mosquito decides whom to bite, depends largely on the effectiveness of the fight against spread by these insects diseases.

In the experiment, the scientists put insects in the room where he felt the smell of people or mice. Then the floor and walls began to vibrate, creating for mosquitoes “uncomfortable” conditions. After that the insects were caught between the two corridors, in one of which the scientists have let the smell of the first part of the experiment. As it turned out, mosquitoes often prefer to not fly in the direction of the odor potential of the “production” after it was linked to unpleasant memories.

Further experiments showed that this regularity does not apply to genetically modified mosquitoes that had hampered production of the hormone called dopamine.

Experts suggest that this regularity can be used to combat mosquito bites. According to scientists, if spread among mosquitoes certain genetic modifications, they will start to fear people and sudden movements.

The study was published in the journal Current Biology.

Experts in the past have attempted to combat malaria and dengue fever using genetically modified mosquitoes. Earlier, an unnamed experts, which referred to British tabloid the Mirror, expressed the view that such measures could prove counterproductive, however, scientists continue to experiment in this direction.

In September 2016, genetics, representing California University found a genetic mutation affecting the “taste” of mosquitoes and forcing some individuals of a certain species more likely to bite people and other cattle.
