A group of researchers from the US led by Jorge Barrio of the University of California-Los Angeles found that a substance in turmeric, can help protect people from mental decline in old age and helps improve mood. Until now, research on curcumin, did not allow to unambiguously answer the question about its usefulness.
Turmeric is used as a spice used primarily in Indian cooking, but part of the root of this plant is the curcumin, which is dedicated to the new scientific work often is added as a dye and in the manufacture of other dishes. In particular, it gives color karcinomu sauce. The specialists already had some evidence that curcumin reduces the likelihood of developing neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease — in any case, the inhabitants of the regions where the dishes with turmeric popular, rarely face such problems. However, neither direct evidence nor, especially, a full understanding of what the mechanism behind it, scientists were not.
In the new study, the experts conducted an experiment involving 40 people aged 51 to 81 years old, not suffering from psychiatric disorders or any form of dementia. Volunteers were divided into two groups — one took the drug with the addition of curcumin and the other a placebo. The experiment lasted for 18 months, after which experts asked the participants to take a memory test, and checked whether the content has changed in their body beta-amyloid and Tau proteins (concentrations of each of these compounds, as expected, can lead to Alzheimer’s disease).
As it turned out, the volunteers who took the drug, both proteins were smaller, and when passing memory tests, they showed a higher result than the control group. Also curcumin, according to specialists of the obtained data helped improve sentiment.
The study was published in the scientific journal Geriatric Psychiatry.
