European society of cardiology published a scientific report with statistical data on cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and prevalence of risk factors are in the EU and Russia. It turned out, the views of Europeans about the us is very much different from those to which we are accustomed. For example, rumors about alcoholism in Russia have been greatly exaggerated — the Lithuanians, the French, the British and the Germans left us far behind. But we are the Smoking, is fat, but very athletic nation. Overall last year the Russians a little less began to get sick cardiovascular diseases and die from them a little less.
Let’s start with the Russian data. 2017 the Russian experts call the “year of cautious optimism,” the situation with the incidence of CVD began to slowly improve. That is, they began a gradual decline. To survive the heart attacks and strokes compatriots have become increasingly. As a result the overall death rate of Russians (from all causes) decreased by as much as 2%. In addition, he said active promotion of a healthy lifestyle, which is imposed to Russians everywhere. As noted by the head of the laboratory of the National medical research centre for preventive medicine, an expert of the League of nation’s health Mehman Mammadov, our people began to monitor closely for risk factors such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and to control them more often, which also impacted on the statistics in a positive way. And yet, cardiovascular disease continues to hold a dominant position in the top causes of death, not only Russians, but also of most countries in the world, which are usually counted among the civilized.
Experts of the European Agency (European Heart Agency) annually publish the Atlas of the European society of cardiology according to the statistics of SWD in 56 countries that are its members. In 2017 this document compares the performance of countries with high income and average income (among citizens 20-79 years). For comparison I took the data provided by the world Health Organization, the world Bank and the Institute for evaluating health risk factors, prevalence and mortality from CVD.
The high-income countries, the report has classified the countries of Western Europe and Scandinavia, middle income – Russia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Belarus, the Balkan countries. And low-income countries – Georgia, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine.
As the prevalence of arterial hypertension in Russia took the 7th place (among women 24% and men 34%). Ahead of us — only the former CIS countries (Estonia, Lithuania, Moldova, Belorus). The lowest frequency of AG identified in England, Italy, Israel and Greece.
The prevalence of hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol in the blood) of the leaders had escaped the Nordic countries. Russia is ranked somewhere in the middle of the ranking. Among women with hypercholesterolemia in our country is revealed in 12% of cases, and for men at 18%. Although, according to the Russian epidemiological studies, the average prevalence of hypercholesterolemia in the adult population is about 50%.
In 2017, the highest prevalence of diabetes (primarily we are talking about type 2 diabetes) was in the Middle East and Turkey. In Russia its prevalence is only 5%. These data differ from official national statistics downward.
But as the prevalence of obesity Russia has confidently entered the top five of countries members of the European society of cardiology. In the first place – Turkey, followed by Britain and Lithuania. Prevalence of obesity among women are much higher than among men. Among men, every fifth is obese, whereas among women, 27%. In General, the high frequency of obesity prevalent in the CIS and Eastern Europe.
Despite the fact that in our country in recent years to actively work on tobacco control, according to the Atlas of the European society of cardiology, Russia is the absolute leader according to the frequency of Smoking among men, the proportion reached 55%, while among women this proportion is 16%.
Contrary to popular belief, alcohol consumption in Russia was not included even in the top ten of European countries. The leader is Lithuania (15 liters per year per person), France, Germany and England, the frequency of alcohol consumption averaging 11 litres, and in Russia — only 10 liters. Alcohol abuse among men is 32% and among women – 12%.
But the frequency of insufficient physical activity Russia takes the last place, that is, it is the best indicator in comparison with other European countries. The smallest physical activity identified in Malta, Serbia, England and other Western countries (45-50% among men and 35% among women). In Russia, lack of physical activity was detected in 13% of men and 10% women.
In General, middle income countries the evolution over the last 10 years there has been a steady performance or a slight increase in CVD. A similar situation is observed in high-income countries.
Why is data our and European studies differ so much?
European data are based on studies and reports. However, there is evidence of international organizations and official statistics. Incidentally, the latter appears later of 3 months after the end of the year. If you talk, for example, on the prevalence of diabetes, the International diabetes Federation and official statistics, it remains one of the most important socially significant diseases in Russia, and not only because of its consequences but also by the prevalence – says Mehman Mammadov.
