Climate scientists: trying to save Earth, mankind will doom it to disaster

Attempt cooling the atmosphere with sulphur dioxide, thereby slowing global warming would hurt the Amazon and in the long run would put humanity on the brink of environmental disaster. To such conclusion experts from several American universities.

The vast majority of scientists do not doubt that global warming is an objective process, even if not to focus on what role it plays (many, however, regard this as the primary role). 17 of the 18 hottest years on record belong to the XXI century, and the three “leaders”, as recently stated by the world meteorological organization, make up 2015, 2016 and 2017. In the long term, according to some predictions, climate change will make the Land unfit for mankind, and a number of scholars believe that even measures to protect the environment don’t already have or almost have no chance to fundamentally change the situation.

As one of the rather unconventional methods of solving problems in the past proposed the idea to artificially cool the atmosphere, spraying a huge amount of sulfur dioxide. Large quantities of this compound in the atmosphere under natural conditions — for example, after the eruption of supervolcanoes — have led to cooling of the Earth’s atmosphere.

A climate model, is composed of researchers has shown that such a measure will lead to the destruction of the Amazon forest — this region will become the only place global warming in such a scenario will slow down, and accelerate. In other places climate change slow be possible, however, to maintain this effect, the atmosphere will be necessary each year to add five million tons of sulfur dioxide, and once this is done there will be an increase in the average air temperature in the world will resume and continue up to ten times faster than to attempt to stop him.

The study was published in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution.
