“Shark” will bite no more: the world’s largest submarine utilized

The world’s largest domestic submarine “Shark” live his life — the strategic submarine “Arkhangelsk” and “Severstal”, derived from the combat composition of the Navy of Russia, will be disposed of. On Friday, said a source in the military-industrial complex. In the ranks remains the last submarine of this series – “Dmitry Donskoy”.

The creation of the USSR nuclear submarines of project 941 “Shark” was a response to the emergence of the US nuclear submarines type “Ohio”, armed with 24 Trident ballistic missiles. “Shark” was supposed to carry only twenty similar missiles R-39, but the rockets had the best features for flight distance to the target and throw the weight of each product was carrying 10 warheads instead of 8 at the Trident. However, the best characteristics of Soviet missiles was offset by a threefold greater weight than Trident, besides our product was almost twice as long as us. These dimensions resulted in a cyclopean size of the missile. With similar to “Ohio” length — 172 meters – “Shark” turned out to be almost twice as wide as the American submarine.

Huge weight and size of the missiles forced the designers to deviate from the established layout of the submarine, when silos are located behind the cabin (under the scheme built by the predecessors of the “Sharks” of the submarine project 667, the American Ohio and Russian submarines of the fourth generation “Borey”) and place them in front of the submarine. Another innovation, which, by the way, subsequently, do not occur on any submarine in the world, was the presence of several strong buildings, namely five. Two of them, the largest, located parallel to each other and extend almost from the stern to the nose, forming something like a catamaran. The diameter of each is 10 meters. Three strong corps were placed under the torpedo, a Central command and feed the mechanical compartments. Each has a private seal, which, according to experts, increased survivability and fire safety at the submarine.

Large internal space allowed us to equip the boat according to the latest naval technology. Not to mention most modern combat equipment “Sharks”, its “stuffed” with such luxuries as oak-panelled sauna with a swimming pool, gym, Solarium, room of psychological relief and even living area. For this set of unusual harsh life of submariners add-ons “Sharks” got in the Navy the nickname “floating Hilton”. Honor to serve at such comfortable ships received only submarine of the Northern fleet.

However, to contain these monsters, and in the Soviet Union from 1976 to 1987 he built as many as six pieces, was a daunting task for the new democratic Russia. Three “Sharks” – TK-202, TK-12 “Simbirsk” and TK-13 cut in the middle of the zero in the framework of the Russian-American program of joint reduction of threat. Sentenced to recycling “Arkhangelsk” and “Severstal” was withdrawn into reserve because of the lack of ammunition for them. Lucky the oldest “the Shark” TK-208 “Dmitry Donskoy”. Ten years ago, this submarine passed repair and modernization, after which it was re-incorporated into the Northern Fleet, already armed new, at that time experimental ballistic missile “Bulava”. It remains in service today, until, until you have completed all the series of submarines “Northwind”. Now there are only three, and unlike the Sharks, on the Northern Navy left the firstborn “Yury Dolgoruky”. Two other submarine – “Alexander Nevsky” and “Vladimir Monomakh” – received divers-Pacific.
