A study conducted by American scientists from Cornell University showed that excess consumption of salt can lead to dementia and increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The specialists managed to find out what the cause of this is the effect of salt on certain immune cells.
Experts note that scientists and informed almost do not doubt the negative influence of excessive salty food on cognitive ability and cardiovascular system, but until now, the mechanism behind this relationship has not been studied fully. In the new study, experts conducted a series of experiments on mice in which rodents consumed 8-16 times more salt than they needed. Few weeks after the mice were transferred to such a “diet”, the speed of reaction and memory was getting worse and blood pressure became higher. Also, experts found a decrease blood flow to the brain in laboratory animals.
Further study of rodents showed that in their small intestine contains much more immune cells, blocking production of nitric oxide than mice from “control groups” which were fed normally. Nitric oxide plays a role in many biological processes and, in particular, is essential for maintaining normal brain function, heart and blood vessels.
The study was published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.
