Fast food consumption and overall fat high-calorie foods that are not considered “healthy food”, affects the immune system permanently making it more “aggressive.” This may indirectly lead to such problems as diabetes and arteriosclerosis. To such conclusion experts of the University of Bonn studying the so-called Western diet.
In the experiment, the scientists during the month were fed laboratory mice a diet containing high amounts of fat and little fiber. One of the observed results was the increase in the number of white blood cells, that spoke of a more active immune system. As it turned out, the reason for this is the influence of improper diet on stem cells of the bone marrow. Moreover, the changes persisted over a long period of time after switching mice to a more balanced “diet”.
According to researchers, malfunction of the immune system may lead to the development of diabetes, and increase the likelihood of cardiovascular diseases. Thus, although experiments on animals, scientists do not exclude that in the body of eating the wrong person can happen in many ways similar processes.
The study was published in the journal Cell.
Previously, a number of studies have shown that diets popular today, the most useful can be called the Mediterranean diet, and relatively recently developed to fight hypertension DASH (Dietary approaches to stop hypertension). Both diets involve eating mostly those foods that are traditionally considered to be “healthy eating”. However, some scholars believe that this concept should not be overestimated — according to some experts, really the ideal diet and set of products for each person should be individualized. Moreover, sometimes the words “healthy diet” on the packaging of the product leads to the fact that the person eats it in large quantities than it should.
