The staff of the space research Institute announced the first results obtained in the study of ancient books by means of astrophysical methods and techniques multi-spectral sensing of the Earth from space.
As reported by “MK” in IKI, one of the oldest records in the State historical Museum on red square. It is unique not only his antiquity, but also use when it was created (probably in Bulgaria in the eleventh century), the first Slavic alphabet — Glagolitic. A fragment of this ancient manuscript written on parchment (a writing material from untanned animal skin), was discovered by researchers in the last century, but to read it was impossible. The fact that the text was washed away in the late XIV century for the recycling of parchment.
To read what has been washed away, scientists IKI and the State historical Museum and used unusual methods. In particular, multispectral analysis is based on the fact that different materials differently absorb and radiate incident light. Thus scientists have discovered the different chemical composition of ink, a different effect of pressure on the pen different writers. The resulting materials were digitized and subjected to software processing.
The result of georeferenced multispectral imagery were examined in all 8 leaves, which was supposed to find in the ancient writings. The best preserved of the last four of them. Staff members of the Museum and found a list of the oldest Slavic liturgical Menaion — a book containing the text of services to holidays and saints ‘ days for each date. They managed to disassemble the passage of the Canon for the Nativity of Christ, celebrated by our ancestors on December 25, stichera and Canon of Saint John Chrysostom (November 13), hymn to the Archangel Michael (8 November). This is the only such list preserved in Glagolitic. The goal of scientists is a complete reading of the monument that will be an event in the world of Slavic studies.
