A group of researchers from several European countries came to the conclusion that women not only live longer than men in ordinary conditions, but also endure hard times. Experts suggest that this proves that the longevity of women is not a social or psychological roots.
Statistics show that life expectancy for women is higher on average than men, but among scientists there is no consensus regarding what may be called the main reason for this phenomenon. The most inclined to the version that such are the natural differences between male and female body, however, there are alternative assumptions — for example, that in society men have more responsibilities associated with risk, or that men are more inclined to take risks by nature.
To find out which of these options is closest to the truth, experts analyzed a number of historical periods in different countries, when life for both men and women became almost unbearable — for example, due to epidemics or mass starvation. As it turned out, in such circumstances, the life expectancy of both genders on average was very small, but in women it was still higher. The exception was the island of Trinidad during the period of active slave trade in its territory two centuries ago. According to the researchers, in this case, a key role could be played by the fact that slaves are men valued more for their survival was applied more effort.
In General, the obtained results, according to the authors of scientific work, suggests that the female body, in all probability, do more effective supports in your life even in difficult-and in more favorable conditions. However, the question of how exactly this mechanism works, professionals to answer not ready yet.
The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
