The head of Roshydromet told about the enormous technological backwardness of the Russian forecasts

Head of Roshydromet Maxim Yakovenko in an interview with “Kommersant” said that the equipment of the Russian forecasts is significantly inferior to foreign analogues, which, however, does not affect the accuracy of weather forecasting.

So, according to him, until recently, forecasters in Russia had a supercomputer with a capacity of 0.3 petaflops and only now it is replaced by a supercomputer at 1.3 petaflops.

In the UK a similar capacity of the device is “16 petaflops, the Swiss and the French — 6, Americans — 4, the Chinese — now 4, will put a 8”.

Not the best way the case with the research devices to the seabed and the atmosphere: if the United States spent about $ 10 billion for three thousand buoys, Russia does not have any such device.

While Yakovenko added that the quality of weather forecasting in Russia is still “on top, no matter how some believed: the accuracy of the forecasts we have up to 96%”, and Roshydromet trust three quarters of the population of the country.
