The task of the UN peacekeeping mission should not be only protection of the representatives of the OSCE on the contact line. Armed peacekeepers must remain on the entire territory of the breakaway republics. This statement was made by foreign Minister of Germany Sigmar Gabriel.
Foreign Minister of Germany, Sigmar Gabriel, said that in the conflict zone in Eastern Ukraine must enter the armed UN peacekeepers. The mission should dwell upon all the territory of the unrecognized LNR and DND.
According to the head of the German foreign Ministry, “resumption of Ukraine’s territorial integrity” is a necessary condition for a peacekeeping mission. If the “blue helmets” will only be on the frontline for the protection of the OSCE representatives, it will actually create a new border, said Gabriel.
“It must be armed and strong UN peacekeeping mission, which continues throughout the occupied territory, and not to protect only the representatives of the OSCE and to dwell only on the line of collision, otherwise it will be the new frontier,” said the German Minister at a joint briefing with foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin in Kiev.
He also added that Germany, together with France and other partners in the UN security Council will work to enter a real peacekeeping mission in the conflict zone: “We try with our French colleagues and all who is included in the UN security Council, to implement a real UN peacekeeping mission in the Donbas.”
A day earlier, before departure to Kiev Gabriel said that Germany does not consider armed conflict in the Donbass frozen. According to the Minister, in the East of Ukraine are still too many heavy weapons and many rounds that says directly that the conflict is in full swing.
