Climate change poses a threat to the animals — animals having the reputation as one of the most tenacious creatures on the planet. A statement that global warming may not spare even these famous creatures were made by Italian experts from the University of Modena and Reggio-Nell-Emilia.
The translucent body of the animalcules consists of four segments and the head, and its size is from 0.1 to 1.5 mm. Living representatives of this type of professionals were able to detect as in hot springs and under the ice, and experiments in the laboratory showed that this stunning “vitality” is not limited to: they are able to survive such tests as the cooled to -271 degrees Celsius (almost absolute zero), heat to 100 degrees, a dose of radiation exceeding thousandfold critically dangerous to human performance, the atmosphere of hydrogen or carbon dioxide, the pressure to 600 atmospheres or conditions of outer space.
However, global climate change, may it not lead to such extreme consequences, it may represent some danger for the animals. Watching living in Antarctica by animalcules kind Acutuncus antarcticus, the researchers found that changes in temperature, humidity and the intensity of ultraviolet radiation had on the population of negative impact. In unusual conditions the animals were left fewer offspring, which, moreover, were born later and was, on average, less healthy than “normal”. In the long term this trend could put the species under threat of extinction, biologists believe.
A study published in the scientific Journal Journal of Experimental Biology.
Recently, another group of researchers came to the conclusion that the analysis of the possible consequences of global warming usually are not given sufficient effect to such factor as humidity of the air.
