Motorcycles never had the reputation of a safe form of transport, however, as found by the expert from the United States and Canada, in certain periods of time to move with them is even more dangerous than usual. According to scientists, it is a full moon.
The researchers collected data on accidents involving motorcycles that occurred between 1975 and 2015 in North America. After this, the researchers compared the 13 029 fatal accidents that occurred on the night of either the full moon or the week before, or a week — total sample covered nearly fifteen hundred nights.
As it turned out, in full, the average number of accidents ended with fatal outcome, was 9.1, and in other nights of 8.64. The researchers also found that in the daytime the number of such accidents was, on average, equal 3,22.
In itself, the study does not allow us to answer the question of how the full moon can be associated with risk for motorcyclists, but is no relation between identified trends and sex, age or equipment of motorcyclists. Experts suggest that the reason is quite simple — the moon distracts people moving around on the bike and loss of concentration in the management of the already unsafe transport can have extremely serious consequences.
The results obtained by the specialists, the scientists said in the journal BMJ.
In November, another group of researchers have new evidence that motorcycles represent a much more dangerous form of transportation than cars. As shown by statistics gathered by researchers from the University of Toronto accident involving a motorcycle in 10 times often led to serious injury, 3 times more often than for injuries overall and 5 times more often – the death of a man.
