Scientists invited to participate in the study, 119 people, 40 of whom suffered from obstructive pulmonary disease, the remaining 39 from coronary heart disease. The age of all participants was more than 60 years. In different periods of time each participant had to choose a new place for walks — sometimes they went through Hyde Park (Royal Park area of 1.4 square kilometers) in Central London, and sometimes just on the streets. The specialists watched as how polluted was the air in these places, and how somehow or other the walk was affected by a number of indicators of the health of volunteers. In particular, account was taken of factors such as arterial stiffness — an indicator that is associated with the development of cardiovascular diseases and lung capacity.
As it turned out, and healthy, and suffering from certain problems of study participants walking down the street would bring more harm than good — if a walk in the Park could have a significant positive effect, in the case of polluted streets, the effect was either almost negligible or negative.

Five months before this, experts from the University of highlands in the American state of new Mexico, came to the conclusion that the processes occurring in the body during walking, contribute to the development of mental abilities.
