A team of specialists representing the University of York, said that at times good results in online multiplayer games can be a Testament not only to the good response or care, but the high human intelligence. As shown by psychologists, people with a higher ranking in the game, averaging more successfully cope with IQ tests.
Professionals interested in games related to the relatively “young” genre of MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena “multiplayer online battle arena”) — they combine elements of real-time strategy and role-playing computer games. The genre in its current form there is less than fifteen years, however some in the games have international tournaments with multimillion dollar prize pools, so for some talented players to the hobby turns into a full-fledged career.
Even players who aren’t planning to make eSports their profession, they compete with each other, and each of them has in one way or another MOBA game that allows you to judge the level of skill. However, so far the society did not exist a unanimous opinion, correlate this rating with the intellectual development of the whole person.
The first stage of the study, experts noted that among the participating volunteers really observed correlation between IQ and rating. Then, experts analyzed data on approximately twenty thousands of players in the popular MOBA-game and found out that their rating with age and varied according to the same principles on which the correction for age is in assessing IQ.
In the “control group”, which included more than ten thousand players in shooters (“shooters”), similar trends have been identified. Experts tend to explain this by the fact that in MOBA games there is an element of strategy, while the shooters to demonstrate a good result it is enough to have a good response.
The study was published in the journal published in the journal PLoS ONE.
Previously, other experts said the fascination with the shooters may have an impact on the brain, and, as expected, from the point of view of reaction speed and episodic memory, these changes are beneficial, but in old age they can cause memory loss long-term.
In another recent study, devoted to computer games, the experts from Cardiff University came to the conclusion that such form of entertainment can not be considered addiction in the full sense of the word. The experts noted that sometimes people do spend a lot of time on the computer to escape from the problems of the real world, however, a fundamental difference, for example, from alcoholism is that of computer games these people are easily refused if their views on life or life itself has changed.
