The United States out of UNESCO – the official notification sent to the State Department of the United States. The decision on the U.S. withdrawal from the Agency of the United Nations education, science and culture will take effect on 31 December 2018.
“It’s a difficult decision, it reflected the concerns of the United States in connection with debts to UNESCO, the need for a fundamental reform of the organization and the continued biased anti-Israel position at UNESCO”, – reads the statement of the American foreign Ministry.
About anti-Israeli stance was not said just so, Israel and UNESCO in recent years the relations were very difficult. In 2011, UNESCO granted Palestine membership in the organization.
Approximately a year ago, in October 2016 Israel suspended cooperation with UNESCO after the organization adopted a resolution on the Holy places of Jerusalem. Then the Minister of education has Israeliarab the UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova’s letter in which he accused the organization of supporting “Islamist terror” and ignoring thousands of years of relations of the Jews with Jerusalem. This happened after 24 members of UNESCO supported the resolution on “occupied Palestine”. Voted against six countries, and 26 abstained. The resolution condemned the restriction of access of Muslims to the Holy places of Jerusalem. In turn, the Palestinian side regarded the UNESCO resolution as a call for Israel to recognize the existence of an independent State of Palestine.
The state Department’s statement was not a bolt from the blue. The United States in this organization for a long time already there were problems – partly because of Israel. So, in November 2013, the right to vote of Washington to UNESCO has been suspended after the United States had not paid in due time, the arrears of contributions for two years in the cultural Agency of the UN. The Americans have suspended their contributions to the organization in October of 2011 (revenues from US $70 million per year), when UNESCO accepted as a member of the Palestinian authority. The United States has stated that it cannot Fund an organization that recognizes the existence of a Palestinian state. But we must bear in mind that before that American contributions have provided about one-fifth of UNESCO’s budget.
Recall that UNESCO was established in November 1945. The headquarters of the organization is located in Paris. Currently, the company has 195 member States, 2 observer States and 10 associate members — areas not responsible for foreign policy.
