The Nobel Foundation was established in 1900 as a private independent non-governmental organization with an initial capital of SEK 31.6 million. Prize winners were paid from the percentage of transactions with securities. The first prize was 150 thousand CZK, which is comparable to the current size at current prices.

In 2012 the Nobel prize has been reduced by 20 percent (from 10 to 8 million SEK) and amounted to $ 1.1 million for existing at that time exchange rate. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Nobel Foundation and was dictated by the financial crisis. The reduction of the size of the award was to ensure that the funds for its presentation to be missed in the long run. Five years later, it was decided for the first time since 2001, to slightly increase the size of the award.

The Nobel prize is almost unanimously acknowledged as the most prestigious scientific award of all, awarded to date. Comparison with it often is the most convincing “compliment” to other premiums (for example, the Abel prize is sometimes called the “Nobel prize for mathematics” and awarded the Hong Kong award Shao – the “Asian Nobel prize”). In accordance with the will of Alfred Nobel, the prize is awarded in five categories: physics, chemistry, physiology and medicine, literature and promoting peace around the world. In addition, in the framework of the Nobel week since 1969 at the initiative of the Swedish Bank also awarded the prize in economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel, known informally as the Nobel prize in Economics. Further increase in the number of nominations is not planned.
