The new President of the Russian Academy of Sciences was academician of RAS, Director of the Nizhny Novgorod Institute of applied physics RAS Alexander SERGEEV. He defeated his opponent Robert Nigmatulin in the second round of voting on Tuesday, told “MK” a source in the Academy. The victory Sergeeva can be judged visually by the number of cast ballots. Officially, the victory will be announced in the next few minutes.

At the election of the President of -2017, which began in March, immediately there have been two clear favorites and one that is supported by most scientists, called for a relatively young academician (he’s only 62), Alexander Sergeyev, the second believed Vladislav Panchenko, Chairman of the Board Russian Foundation for basic research (RFBR), scientific Director of the Institute on laser and information technologies Russian Academy of Sciences, which, according to rumors, has actively promoted the head of the Kurchatov Institute Mikhail Kovalchuk.
I must say that the chances of Panchenko was not obvious from the beginning. The universal dissatisfaction with his candidacy expressed on the first day of the General meeting of the RAS academician Vladimir Zakharov: “I was immediately against Panchenko, primarily because he announced his candidacy in September, after treacherously disrupt the election, suddenly withdrawing its candidate in March.” So thought many who had a chance to talk to the correspondent “MK” on the sidelines of the General Assembly. The rejection of the audience felt himself Vladislav Yakovlevich, who seemed acted a little scontatissimi, reading the text of his speech on paper. To tricky questions from the colleagues replied unconvincingly.
Forward also broke the one for whom frankly were sick not only the Physical members of the native branch of the RAS, but many doctors, and all the Ural branch of the RAS, members of the “Club July 1,” disagree with the RAS reform adopted by the government in 2013. It asked voters to vote for ex-President Vladimir Fortov and screened by government from a list of candidates in August Alexei Khokhlov. By the way, I should add that in the government also relied on Sergeeva – in particular, it is known that his candidacy was supported by former head of Rosatom, who is now the Deputy head of the presidential administration of the Russian Federation Sergey Kirienko.
For what have awarded colleagues so much trust Alexander Sergeev?
First, according to many who visited, this is the most sensible, “live” academician from all nominated” who best understands the problems of the Academy and Russian science as a whole (though himself from the provinces) and sees solutions to them. In his native Nizhny Novgorod, IAP RAS, he started as an Intern researcher, and “grown” to the Director, moving home institution.
Secondly, the specialist in theoretical physics of nonlinear waves and experimental laser physics Sergeeva a great reputation among their Western colleagues. There was a reason he leads a group of physicists within a collaboration LIGO Scientific Collaboration, recorded in 2015 gravitational waves, resulting from the merger of two black holes. They say that without this group of foreigners, nothing would have happened.
At the General meeting, responding to a question from competitors about its lack of maturity at the head of the oldest Institute (IAP RAS, he directs just two years), Sergeev could wrap it in their favor, citing a more current perception of reality, a certain detachment from Metropolitan undercover games to order has all tired.
Priority actions from academician Alexander Sergeyev to save science in Russia
1. To reach consensus between the Academy and the authorities regarding the understanding of the causes of the present state of Russian science and ways out of the crisis and role of RAS and fundamental research.
2. To change the nature of management academia and to set priorities in the relationship between RAS and Fano, on the basis of the principle — science should control scientists.
3. To ensure that the Academy, even within the existing legal framework — 253-FZ and the Charter of wounds received real tools for the job.
