A strange phrase Depardieu drew attention at the Sakharov center after seeing it in the translation of the article published by the site “InoSMI”.

Talking about authoritarian countries whose leaders (such as Fidel Castro and Vladimir Putin) he was familiar, Depardieu said that “Putin visited several prisons, even those where he was Andrei Sakharov. And you know what? They say it’s the best prison, where you wonderful food”.

He spoke positively about Chechnya and advised to go there to his critics: “Go there and see with your own eyes. Take a chance yourself. I went there. I was not tortured. I was not poisoned, and I wasn’t one hundred percent agree with everything that he saw”.

The phrase Depardieu about Sakharov in the Centre named after academician noted with bewilderment: “Amazing! It turns out that Andrei Sakharov was in prison, informs us of Gerard Depardieu.”

Recall that from 1980 to 1986, Sakharov and his wife Yelena Bonner was in exile in Gorky (Nizhny Novgorod).
