Russian Railways announced the launch of regular freight trains on the new section of “zhuravka-Millerovo”, which laid bypassing Ukraine. If earlier trains twice crossed the Ukrainian border, now the path passes only through the territory of Russia. At the moment, the movement is open only for freight trains, passenger service will be operational by the end of autumn. Thanks to the emergence of a workaround Russia will annually save up to $ 200 million.

First time talking about the need to build a workaround even after the collapse of the Soviet Union. If in the Soviet period and the pre-revolutionary years it was not, since 1991, the problem became urgent. The train, traveling from Central Russia to the southern regions, had 26 kilometres pass through the territory of the Square. However, in the crisis of the ‘ 90s further words business has not gone. In the early 2000s, came the first draft, but then it was decided to hold it until better times, as the total cost estimate of 500 billion rubles was a burden for the Russian budget.
Initially we considered the option of constructing a rail length of over 700 kilometers. The project planned to start in 2018 and finish by 2020.However, the coup in Ukraine in 2014 and the conflict in the Donbas forced to moderate appetites and to accelerate. As a result, in the fall of 2015, it was decided to lead the way by the shortest route, the 122 kilometre, which took place from the station zhuravka, Voronezh region, Millerovo to Rostov. The final cost of the project amounted to about 55 billion rubles, and the construction of the fabric was engaged in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. In August of this year the construction of the railway was completed, and the motion was carried out in test mode until September 20. Passenger service will open by the end of autumn.
The hasty construction of the railway was due to the unstable situation in Ukraine. In may of this year, Kiev had already planned to block the railway with Russia on may 18 was going to stop the freight, and from 1 July a passenger. But then the representatives of “Ukrzaliznytsia” has denied the information on intentions to block passenger service. In Moscow, played the lead.
Meanwhile, the opening section “zhuravka-Millerovo” serious blow to the budget of the Square, previously Moscow was annually transferred to Kiev, about $ 200 million for crossing its territory. This was reported by analyst group of “Teletrade” Bogdan Terzi.
“I believe that in this case Ukraine suffered the most. First, the average Russian annually paid about $ 200 million for transit freight and passenger trains, and now those revenues will not. Second, many railway routes, which remained on the territory of Ukraine, now will be a dead end and will just idle. Thirdly, the people that served these routes will remain without work. If you conclude that the damage to Kiev is much higher than 200 million dollars”, — said Terzi.
Unfortunately, some losses will be incurred by the inhabitants of Russian villages. Thus, the appearance of a workaround, in fact, cut off from civilization Chertkovo, which had the status of the hub station. Residents of nearby villages made a “bread” at the expense of service routes and tourists who transit stayed on the station.
