An asteroid the size of two of the Chelyabinsk meteorite headed to Earth

Experts from the Department of astronomy, geodesy and environment monitoring of the Urals Federal University, said the asteroid with a diameter of about 40 meters, approaching the Earth. Celestial body, called 2012 TC4 is flying at a speed of 27 to 540 kilometers per hour, and to our planet it will close on October 12.

The first asteroid was discovered in 2012, and this is due to the first part of its name. Then the space object flew near our planet — the distance between them was 94 800 kilometers.

Experts believe that at this time the moment of the maximum rapprochement with our planet the asteroid will be from it on distance of about 44 880 kilometers — almost ten times less than the distance from the Earth to the moon. It is worth noting that for the recognition of the satellite “potentially dangerous” (though in many respects this status is rather formal) enough to that particular stage of their journey he was not more than twenty times further from the Earth than its natural satellite. As informs ura.news, some experts do not exclude that one day 2012 TC4 can really face of our planet. However, perhaps it will happen next month.

As noted, the Earth approaching asteroid is approximately two times greater than the size of the famous Chelyabinsk meteorite exploded over the territory of the Chelyabinsk region on 15 February 2013. Then the shock wave from the explosion blew out Windows of many houses. Suffered 1 613 people, and material damage amounted to nearly half a billion rubles.

According to the calculations of some experts, the fall to Earth of a space body, three times more than the Chelyabinsk meteorite, and flying at a speed of 75 thousand kilometers per hour, could destroy a city and cause destruction at a distance of up to three million kilometres from the crash site. While some scientists are concerned that current methods for the detection of asteroids do not guarantee that such a dangerous cosmic body will be able to detect in advance.
