Lithuanian President: Russia military exercise “Zapad-2017” simulates the conflict with NATO

The President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite at the meeting with the UN Secretary-General antónio Guterres informed him of “aggressive and offensive nature” of Russian-Belarusian exercises “West-2017”. Note that information on upcoming maneuvers caused a panic in Ukraine and the Baltic States.

At the meeting with UN Secretary General Grybauskaite said that the exercises “West-2017” allegedly simulated a real conflict with NATO countries, and for this reason they threaten the security of the region and world community as a whole, the press service of the Lithuanian leader.

The President also said about “hiding” data on the scale and scenarios, maneuvers, deployment of troops and tactical weapons. “Are concentrated in the Kaliningrad region, nuclear weapons, artillery and missiles capable of reaching even Lisbon”, — said Grybauskaite.

Joint exercises “West-2017”, which runs until 20 September, held on grounds of the Republic of Belarus and in the Kaliningrad, Leningrad and Pskov regions of Russia. They involve more than 12 thousand soldiers.

The Russian defense Ministry repeatedly said that the maneuvers are purely defensive in nature. While the Ministry stressed that the statement that the teachings of the preparation of a “bridgehead for the occupation” of Lithuania, Poland or Ukraine, have nothing to do with reality.

Thus, the speaker of the General staff of the Armed forces of Ukraine Vladislav Voloshin suggested that during maneuvers of the Russian army can build a “corridor” in the Kaliningrad region, simultaneously capturing part of the territory of Poland and Lithuania. The Minister of defence of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak said that Kiev has measures in place in case of “invasion” of the Russian military.
