Gabriel linked the entry of peacekeepers to Ukraine with the weakening of anti-Russian sanctions

The foreign Minister of Germany Sigmar Gabriel in an interview with Spiegel Online has made it clear that if we are able to positively resolve the issue of sending peacekeepers to the South-East of Ukraine, then you can immediately proceed to the solution of the question of easing of sanctions against Russia.

“This week the idea of deploying peacekeepers to Ukraine discussed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Now we need to quickly begin negotiations in new York. If this is successful and we can implement it quickly, we need to move quickly through the initial weakening of the sanctions,” he said.

However, the problem lies in the fact that Russia believes that peacekeepers should provide security for OSCE personnel and be placed on the demarcation line between the Ukrainian army and militias of the breakaway republics. While Kiev and the West believe that peacekeepers should be placed in the entire territory of Donbas up to the border with Russia.
