The defense Ministry explained the name of the Russian-Belarusian exercises “West-2017”

Deputy Minister of defence of the Russian Federation Alexander Fomin in an interview with the German broadcasting company Deutsche Welle stated that in the title of a joint Russian-Belarusian exercises “West-2017,” no political overtones. Consequently, the Baltic States and Eastern Europe can sleep peacefully.

“Of course. And I mean it,” – said Fomin in response to a reporter’s question about whether the people of Eastern Europe to sleep in peace.

Defense Ministry spokesman added that the name of the exercise “the West” means the Western part of Russia and not a Western state.

“The West” should not be taken in the broad political sense as a geographical term, which includes countries of the West, the European Union or NATO,” – said Fomin.

Russian-Belarusian military exercises “West-2017” will be held 14-20 September on the territory of Belarus, as well as three Russian sites. In the maneuvers will take part about 12 thousand military personnel.

In Europe repeatedly expressed concern for these exercises, and in Kiev has repeatedly stated that Russia intends to “work out” in the capture
