People who have too frequent use of disinfectant cleaning products that are more likely to suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. According to experts, representing the French national Institute of health and medical research, the risk of developing COPD in this case increased by 22-32 percent.
Originally, scientists analyzed data collected in 1989 godov the study, involving more than 55 thousand women who worked as nurses. They then found out who of the participants still working in the same field, and watched them in the period from 2009 to 2017. The specialists chose to participate in the study, women who were previously not suffering from COPD.
As it turned out, the risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was significantly higher among those participants who use disinfectant cleaners on a regular basis — once a week. These results remained true after the scientists made a “correction” for bad habits, the body mass index of the participants and other factors, which from the point of view of the study could be considered outsiders.
Scientists say that previously, a similar relationship was identified between the disinfectants and the risk of developing asthma. Also, in several studies it was shown that cleaners suffer from COPD more often than other people, but still, according to experts, the relationship between the disease and regular use of cleaning products not subjected to scrutiny. The data obtained, according to the researchers, may help protect the health of all people who, because of job duties or during the work on the house regularly use the disinfectant.
