What happened in Myanmar: Arakan massacre of Buddhists and Muslims

Raised in the Internet the statements of Kadyrov, Sunday, the vigil at the Embassy of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in Moscow and a mass rally in Grozny to protect the persecuted in a distant country, Muslims suddenly forced the Russians to pay attention to the little-known problem.

Actually going into the history of conflict in predominantly Buddhist Myanmar’s persecuted Muslim minority, has long been of concern in the world – both at government level and in the human rights environment.

What is Myanmar? At the time, this country in Southeast Asia was known as Burma. But the locals do not have the name like, considering it foreign. Therefore, after 1989 the country was renamed Myanmar (translated as “fast”, “strong”).

Since independence in 1948, Burma was the civil war, which was attended by the Burmese authorities, the Communist guerrillas, rebels, separatists. And if this explosive “cocktail” to add drug dealers of the Golden triangle, covering Myanmar in addition to Thailand and even Laos, it becomes obvious that the situation in Burma, earth symbolized the peace and quiet.

From 1962 to 2011 the country was ruled by the military, and the head of the winning in 1989, the opposition Democratic League, the future winner of the Nobel peace prize To Aung San Suu Kyi for a long time was imprisoned under house arrest. The country was in quite a remarkable isolation from the outside world – including in connection with the Western sanctions. But in recent years Myanmar has witnessed significant changes, elections were held. Last year Aung San Suu Kyi became Minister of foreign Affairs and a state Advisor (de facto Prime Minister).

In a country with a population of 60 million people, there are more than a hundred nationalities: Burman, Shan, Karen, argancy, Chinese, Indians, Mona, Kachina etc. the Vast majority of believers are Buddhists, there are Christians, Muslims, and animists.

– Myanmar as a multiethnic country is experiencing load problems of this kind, – says Director of the ASEAN Centre at MGIMO University Victor Sumsky. New government attempts to resolve the conflict situation, but in fact it turns out that the fore the issue of Rohingya…

So who are the Rohingya? This ethnic group living in compact communities in Myanmar Rakhine state (Arakan). Rohingya people are Muslims. According to estimates, their population in Myanmar is from 800 thousand to 1.1 million people. It is believed that most of them moved into the territory of Burma in the days of British colonial rule.

The authorities in Myanmar called Rohingya illegal immigrants from Bangladesh – and on that basis denies them citizenship. The law forbade them to bear more than two children. The government tried to resettle them in Bangladesh – but there is nobody waiting. Not by chance the UN calls them one of the most persecuted minorities in the world. Many members of the Rohingya people fleeing to Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand. But a number of countries in South-East Asia – including Islam – is refusing to accept these refugees, and vessels with migrants are deploying in the sea.

During the Second World war, when Burma was occupied by Japan in 1942 was the so-called “Arakan massacre” between the Muslim Rohingya who have received weapons from the British, and the locals-Buddhists supported the Japanese. Tens of thousands of people died, many people became refugees. Of course, these events are not added trust relationship between the communities.

From time to time in places of compact residence of Rohingya broke out serious friction, comes often to the point of bloodshed. At that time, as a Buddhist Burmese arrange Muslim riots in Rakhine, the leader of Tibetan Buddhists, the Dalai Lama has called for Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to support the representatives of the ethnic Rohingya.

The situation became especially acute after in October last year, dozens of people attacked three Myanmar border post, resulting givati guards were killed. Then in the Rakhine state troops were brought. More than 20 thousand people fled to Bangladesh. In February 2017, a report was published of the UN, created on the basis of surveys of refugees: it gives the shocking facts of the extrajudicial killings of Rohingya by the local nationalists and security forces, gang rapes, etc.

Only in recent days in Bangladesh ran about 90 thousand representatives of the Rohingya. It happened after 25 August, the rebels of the “army of Arakan Rohingya solidarity” attacked dozens of police stations and an army base in Rakhine. Subsequent clashes and military offensive has claimed at least 400 lives. Authorities blame militants in the burning of houses and killings of civilians and human rights activists blame the army. And before Ramzan Kadyrov to protect Burmese Muslims last week was the Turkish President Erdogan, who called the events a genocide, which is “silent”…

After the spontaneous meeting of Muslims at the Embassy of Myanmar in Moscow in defense of the faith rally was held in Grozny — it was attended by about a million people.
