The Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the “raider capture” the next step in the diplomatic war between the US and Russia. The U.S. side demanded to close the Russian Consulate General in San Francisco in response to the expulsion from Russia of hundreds of employees of the Embassy of the United States. Yuri Ushakov stressed that the Russian targets in the United States have diplomatic immunity, so step the American authorities must not remain unanswered. A “MK” talked to the rector of the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian foreign Ministry Evgeny Bazhanov, who at one time worked in our Consulate General in San Francisco. It turned out that even during the cold war Soviet diplomats in the United States worked in the best conditions.
“This step, of course, not conducive to the improvement of relations between Russia and the United States, and it is very sad, stressed in a conversation with “MK” Evgeny Bazhanov. — Let’s hope this difficult period in our relationship in the end will be overcome. Moreover, it is necessary for them and us, and from any point of view: economy, security, culture and so on.
Even during the cold war when I worked there, a Consulate General was opened and functioned. It is very actively engaged in various forms of activities, friends and with Hollywood and Silicon valley. So don’t quite understand this move by the us authorities, and when the cold war no, soil no, we are not separated by ideologies. Moreover, in the end still have to return for the opening of consulates.
The cold war was, of course, imposed its own limitations. In Silicon valley, for example, we could travel only with special permission. And somebody was suspicious, someone with a dislike, but it was interest in and to the contacts and relations, and we spoke at a household level is very good. Still, San Francisco is the most liberal city in the US, so it was less difficult to work with than in Washington or new York. Probably so closed: liberal audience in San Francisco wanted us something very bad to do. But do not forget: the US authorities have stated that none of our diplomats are not sent. Those who worked in the Consulate General in San Francisco can be transferred to our other diplomatic missions in the United States.
It is difficult to say who is more to blame in this situation. Neither Obama nor trump are not dictators. In America there is a very powerful bureaucracy — the state Department, the Pentagon, the military-industrial complex, Congress. They want to lead the world, but in Russia this is not very much agree, and they’re very upset, offended and gives them the desire to punish Russia. But it is unlikely to succeed, because Moscow would still maintain an independent position, to defend their interests. And this despite the fact that we are interested in normal relations with the United States if they agree not to interfere in our Affairs and not to lead by our actions, not to impose its will.”
