Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Angela Merkel and President of France Emmanuel macron on Monday, August 28, urged the presidents of Russia and Ukraine Vladimir Putin and Petro Poroshenko to respect their commitments and to publicly and clearly support the ceasefire in the zone of armed conflict in the Donbass, and also to ensure that the relevant instructions were sent to the military. Joint statement the French and German leaders published on the official website of the government of Germany.
Merkel and macron also expressed serious concern that after telephone negotiations of leaders of “Norman Quartet” and the already tense situation in the East of Ukraine has not undergone significant changes for the better. “There are still numerous ceasefire violations and attacks, including heavy weapons,” the document reads.
In a joint statement, the two leaders also noted that observers from the Organization for security and cooperation in Europe (OSCE) continue to report about the threats and limitation of movement, especially in areas outside of Kiev.
Earlier, the Russian side has repeatedly stated that it is a mediator in resolving the Ukrainian crisis, but not a party to the conflict in the Donbass.
