Paleontologists found a cute herbivorous relative of the tyrannosaurs

Experts from Cambridge University and London’s natural history Museum, learned of a very unusual dinosaur, discovered a few years ago. The lizard was a plant, but had a close relative of the Tyrannosaurus Rex and other famous predators of ancient times. This and some other features of the new species, according to scientists, allow for a fresh look at the evolution of dinosaurs.

Because the ancient animal was discovered in southern Chile, called him “cilazapril” and the full name of the new species sounds like Chilesaurus diegosuarezi. Scientists believe that in many respects is one of the most mysterious dinosaurs ever discovered. Filesavr lived about 145-140 million years ago. In the height of adults was approximately three meters. Among the most famous related ciliary widowed can be called such predators as Tyrannosaurus and VelociRaptor. Discovered the lizard had with these dinosaurs some similarities, however, judging by the attempts to reconstruct his appearance, looked much more harmless.

The animal was so unusual sochetaniem characteristics of carnivorous and herbivorous dinosaurs, which some media called him a “dinosaur Frankenstein”. No less unusual was the “kinship” of the studied species, being the relative of the Tyrannosaurus and other thenatural, he was also the ancestor of ornithischian dinosaurs — the higher representatives of the ancient fauna, characterized by small size and high movement speed (it should be noted that, despite the name, birds are not descended from these dinosaurs, but from tanatarov).

If the findings are correct, Chilesaurus diegosuarezi can serve as proof that predatory and herbivorous dinosaurs were among themselves much more closely related than today according to many experts, say the authors of a new study.

The results and their findings, the scientists said in the pages of scientific publication Biology Letters.
