Crimean authorities declared the failure of Kiev “travel blockade” of the Peninsula

Ukraine’s attempts to arrange a “travel embargo” of Crimea was not a success, said the head of the state Committee of the government of the region-ethnic relations Zaur Smirnov.

According to him, Kiev authorities feared the outrage of its own citizens and social revolt on the Ukrainian checkpoints. “The attempt to make Crimea a tourist blockade drowned in a mass flow of Ukrainian citizens who (…) have not changed their desire to visit the Crimea”, — said Smirnov.

That the Kiev authorities had ordered the Ukrainian border guards to create artificial barriers for tourists wishing to spend a summer vacation in the Crimea, Smirnov said in mid-July. The purpose of the travel embargo, according to officials, is the desire to hide from the Ukrainians information about what is actually happening on the Peninsula.
