An asteroid the size of a house is rapidly approaching Earth

Asteroid 2012 TC4, comparable in size to multi-storey house, is approaching our planet and on 12 October this year, will fly past Earth, almost faced him. However, according to experts, representing the European space Agency, the probability of such collision this year is still small.

As its name suggests, the asteroid was first discovered in 2012, the Diameter of a celestial body, as far as we can judge at the moment, is from 15 to 30 meters, that is, the size of it is comparable to the meteorite that exploded on February 15, 2013 in the sky over the Chelyabinsk region. In the European space Agency noted that if 2012 TC4 actually entered the Earth’s atmosphere, the consequences of this event could be comparable to those that occurred in the fall of the Chelyabinsk meteorite.

By calculations of experts, at the moment of the closest approach distance between the earth and the asteroid will be very small — only 44 thousand miles. This is almost an order of magnitude smaller than the distance to the moon, despite the fact that potentially dangerous scholars suggest that even space objects flying 20 times further from Earth than its natural satellite.

However, such a small on a cosmic scale, distance, scientists are not seen as cause for concern, but as a rare opportunity to study a celestial body from a short distance. In this regard, during convergence, the researchers plan to collect as much data about 2012 TC4 to further analyze this information.

The fall of the Chelyabinsk meteorite is four and a half years ago led to what is affected 1 613 people, and material damage amounted to nearly half a million rubles. In advance to detect an approaching space body, no one has succeeded, and the incident has led many scholars, politicians and public figures in Russia and other countries to look more seriously at the meteor threat. However, according to many experts, reliable way to detect in advance any asteroid or comet, hurtling straight to Earth, still does not exist, though work in this direction is active.
