Iceberg the size of a quarter in Moscow region broke away from Antarctica

The giant part is located in Antraktida glacier Larsen C broke away from it formed an iceberg, the surface of which is estimated at 6 thousand square kilometers. That’s four times more than London with all its suburbs, or four times less than the Moscow region. However, the surprise of this event was not for the glacier gradually increased, the cracks, the researchers observed quite a long time.

A lot of iceberg, experts estimate about one billion tons. The specialists watched the glacier Larsen With for ten years and in 2010 they saw a suspicious split. A year ago, this split was rapidly increasing, that recently led to the fact that a giant iceberg from the glacier separated. Now it is over and the wind blows in the Atlantic ocean. Experts admit that in the near straps it will split into a number of smaller fragments. Anyway, it is assumed that a huge block of ice in the long term can pose a danger to ships.

The researchers reported that the iceberg, with high probability, is among the ten largest facilities of its kind ever recorded by scientists, albeit significantly lagging behind the “leaders”. For example, in 1956 it was reported that the ship of naval forces of the United States sailed past the iceberg, the area of which reached 32 thousand kilometers (more than the area of Belgium), however, to confirm this discovery not possible — for this you need satellite images, and the time satellites in those years has not yet arrived. However, the area of the largest of the icebergs, the size of which was confirmed, reaches 11 thousand square kilometers, i.e. it is larger recently calved piece of glacier almost doubled. And another large iceberg with an area of 9 thousand square kilometers, in the past broke off the same glacier Larsen S.

Iznachalno ice shelf Larsen consisted of three parts, however, in 1995, collapsed glacier in the Larsen A area, and in 2002-m of the shelf broke away, the second part called Larsen B.
