Sun creams are fraught with unexpected danger, said the scientists

A group of researchers from Department of chemistry, Moscow state University. M. V. Lomonosov have found that in certain conditions, avobenzone, a component of many sunscreens, is divided into a number of harmful chemicals. The most unpleasant is the fact that these conditions are quite typical for a situation in which the person may need sun cream — we are talking about skin contact with chlorinated water.

Avobenzone is the most popular UV filter in the world and approved, including by the authorities in many countries. This substance is “transformery” light energy into heat energy and absorbs ultraviolet light thus protecting humans. By themselves, they really are harmless, scientists say. However, as the study showed, in reality, the situation is somewhat less favourable.

In experiments with the use of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry experts have found that in aqueous solution, avobenzone can break down into harmful chemicals, including directly on wet skin. Among the most toxic substances which may occur as a result of this process, the researchers called phenols and chlorinated acetophenones.

Thus, every outdoor swimming pool is a complete set of “components” to the harmful properties of sunscreens could occur. Thus, according to the researchers, chlorination of sea water, the effect could be even worse, as the decay products of avobenzone bodetree diverse. Also, experts suggest that the danger may be and copper salts, which are often used in swimming pools to give water a beautiful blue color.

On the results, the scientists said in the article, which was published in the journal chemosphere is. Experts note that studies similar to held by them, may serve as a basis for discussion about the prohibition of a substance.
