The US has criticized Turkey for the lack of respect for history of the Hagia Sophia

State Department spokesman Heather Nauert, speaking to reporters, demanded that Turkish authorities to maintain the status of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.

“Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, is of extreme importance and historical value. The white house has urged the Turkish government to preserve its respected status and its complex history… It does not mean that Washington opposes conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque. It’s a complicated story. And we recognize the enormous importance of Hagia Sophia for other faiths and urge the Turkish authorities to consider it,” she said.
