The President of the United States Donald trump inadvertently “offended” Ukraine, using the name of the country “hated” for Ukrainians toponym. An awkward situation allegedly occurred in the course of the meeting the 45th head of the White house with the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.
Western journalists say that Ukrainians are very sensitive to this, because that was the name of Ukraine in the Soviet period: the USSR ( the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic).
According to another version, the definite article in combination with this name recalls staroslavenskog the word “suburb”, so “the Ukraine” trump allegedly said that the US President said about Ukraine in the context of its relationship with Russia, which, though, questioned the sovereignty of the country.
In turn, the former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul said in his Tiwtter that trump, apparently, has not been properly informed on this issue.
Note that after the meeting of the two presidents Poroshenko said that he considers trump a friend of Ukraine and doesn’t think he has any special relationship with Moscow. According to him, Kyiv received from the United States “broad support”.
