Putin spoke about the impact of Helmut Kohl on his views

The President of Russia Vladimir Putin admitted that familiarity with the former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl changed his view of the relationship between Russia and Europe.

According to Putin, with Kohl he was familiar since the early 90-ies, “thoroughly present during his conversation with the mayor of St. Petersburg Anatoly Sobchak, he invited him to his residence.” Afterwards there were several meetings. But that first conversation made a very strong impression.

“I saw a deep, thinking person who lives from election to election, although it is important to him, but he thinks the prospect is very distant, and very thoroughly, deeply, based on knowledge and their own experience of the statesman, one of the largest European countries”, – said Putin.

He added that the views of Kohl on the future relations between Russia and Germany, Russia and Europe greatly influenced his own.
