Vladimir Putin said in an interview with the American Director Oliver stone, did not immediately agree to the proposal by Boris Yeltsin to head the government in 1999, then to run for President. As noted by the head of state, the decision to take responsibility for the country was given to him is not easy, including because of concern about the safety of his family.

Putin explained that when he arrived from St. Petersburg to Moscow, he was not in the capital, “a special support of some powerful ties,” and he doesn’t understand why Boris Yeltsin chose him as his successor, reports TASS.
The politician said in 1999, Yeltsin invited him to his office and offered to take the seat of Prime Minister, with the further prospect of promotion to the post of head of state.
However, the first time Putin refused. “I said that is a very big responsibility, it can change my whole life and I’m not sure I’m ready for it,” – said the Russian leader.
According to him, to take upon themselves the responsibility for Russia in the difficult period was “very difficult”. The politician admitted that he was thinking only about “where to hide the children.”
After these words, Oliver stone asked Putin whether everything happened as he describes it, the Russian leader replied in the affirmative.
The politician noted that at the time wasn’t sure one hundred percent, what will be the head of state because “no guarantees for this reason nobody gave”. “I’m just for myself, then decided that if fate so ordered, then you need to go to the end”, — he explained.
