The United Nations has warned about the growing threat of nuclear war that can start even by accident, for example, due to incorrect triggering of automatic systems of early detection of launches of ballistic missiles or other military surveillance systems. Such apocalyptic scenario can result in bad weather conditions or hacker attacks. This is stated in the study “understanding the risks of nuclear weapons” which was published by the UN Institute for disarmament UNIDIR.
It is reported that a communication network of one state can unexpectedly react to a missile attack by another country, though that was not inflicted, and, in turn, to strike back. So, at first glance, an accidental situation could lead to nuclear war.
The study explains that the threat has increased because of the growth in the number and complexity of automated military systems. At risk are all connected to the military system, including communications between command and launch vehicles, satellite and radar systems and other.
