The leader of the group DDT Yuri Shevchuk, issued an open letter in defense of the “Novaya Gazeta”, addressed to the Chechen Minister for national policy, external relations, press and information Dzhambulat Umarov. In it, he asks to “calm people down” and to stop, thus, the attacks on the newspaper for its publication about the persecution of homosexuals in Chechnya.
According to Shevchuk, he “knows the ancient traditions of the Caucasus and customs of its peoples,” know how’s “close to the heart perceive any negativity” associated with domestic life, but notes that journalists are “New” to defend the constitutional rights of people regardless of region.
