NASA bought five seats on the Russian Soyuz

NASA signed with Boeing a contract to purchase from the company an additional five seats on Russian spacecraft “Soyuz”. It is reported by Space News.

Seats on Soyuz need NASA to deliver astronauts to the ISS. The Agency plans to increase the crew size from three to four. Additional flights to be held fall 2017 and spring 2018. In addition, the agreement covers three additional places on the ship in 2019. The total cost of the contract with Boeing amounted to 373,5 million dollars.

Place in 2019 may be required by NASA, if SpaceX and Boeing will not have time to complete the development of their manned spacecraft.

Now astronauts on the ISS to deliver only “Unions”, but in the US already are manned spacecraft Dragon V2 and CST-100, as well as the lunar-Mars Orion.

Aerospace company Boeing received five seats on Soyuz in the repayment of debts under the program “Sea launch”.
