Rocket “Soyuz” now do without Ukraine

The launch of the space truck “Progress MS-05” to the ISS was at the same time the farewell flight of the carrier rocket “Soyuz-U”, first went into orbit in 1973. “Precedents of such longevity in the world no longer exists” – say the experts and explain how the failure of this rocket is associated with the contradictions between Russia and Ukraine.

The recent launch of “Soyuz-U” was held on Wednesday morning at 8.58 GMT at the Baikonur cosmodrome site No. 1 (“Gagarin’s start”). According to “Roskosmos”, nine minutes later from the third stage rocket separated spacecraft “Progress MS-05”.

“Control system “Soyuz-U” was composed entirely of components produced on the territory of Ukraine”

To the International space station the machine needs to fly 24 February to 11.34 GMT and approach to docking compartment of module Pirs. It is expected that “Progress” will deliver to the orbital complex 2.5 tons of cargo, including fuel, compressed gases, laboratory equipment, medicines, supplies, equipment, food and water, suits and parcels for crew members.

In the release, “Roskosmos” says that the launch of “Soyuz-U” “was the last for the most massive and one of the most reliable models in the legendary family of carrier rockets “Soyuz”. The previous launch of the rocket, occurred on 1 December, was unfortunate – accident. The state Commission investigating the cause, came to the conclusion that there was an opening of the tank of the third stage of “Soyuz-U” because entering the pump oxidizer particles. Immediately after the incident, “Roskosmos” sent all blocks of the third stage of the rocket to the manufacturer for additional checks, and the engine of the third stage of the latter, soaring Wednesday “Soyuz-U” was replaced.

“Don’t start it at all was impossible, the rocket thing is expensive, just don’t throw it out, – commented the newspaper VIEW head of the Moscow space club Ivan Moiseev. See that everything went well. But most of it will not produce, because it is a very old missile, and it was used perhaps more often and longer than others.”

Indeed, first launched in 1973, the carrier rocket “Soyuz-U” was the “most massive in the history of space exploration”, it was committed 788 launches, of which only 22 were emergency.

“Until now, this rocket has survived virtually unchanged, – told the newspaper OPINION columnist of the magazine “news of cosmonautics” Igor Lisov. – Precedents of such longevity in the world no longer exists. To replace it with another wanted for a long time, but hindered economic turmoil”.

According to experts, the successors of the “Soyuz-U” will be carrier rockets “Soyuz-FG”, which will be used to launch manned spacecraft, and to a greater extent family of rockets “Soyuz-2”, which “will run the same “Progress”.

In turn in conversation with the newspaper VIEW the member-correspondent of the Russian Academy of cosmonautics. K. E. Tsiolkovsky Andrei Ionin said that the replacement for the “legendary “Soyuz-U” to the Russian space industry was preparing the last 15 years.

“Developed a whole range of modernized carrier rockets “Soyuz-2” and that there had been two main goals, – said the expert. The first is the increase in mass delivered to orbit cargo due to the replacement of the engine. In General, the mass has increased by a ton. Of course, such weight need not always, but this ability techniques will never be superfluous. The second very important motive – the need for a full transition to Russian hardware. The control system of the same “Soyuz-U” was composed entirely of components produced on the territory of Ukraine, and the fact that it can be a challenge, it was clear even in the 1990s”.

According to experts, the launch vehicles “Soyuz-2” from “Soyuz-U” is different in that they are collected exclusively from domestically produced components.

“The same problems – increasing tonnage and own full cycle of production – was solved when upgrading other space applications, – says Jonas. For example, the transition of the carrier rocket “proton” launch vehicle “proton-M”.
