Scientists using fish to establish the impact of phenanthrene on human health

The oil spill that occurred in 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico in the accident on the Deepwater Horizon, has helped scientists to identify the causes of diseases of the cardiovascular system. For example, the fish affected by the accident, it was found that the cause of death and heart disease fish it served as phenanthrene. This hydrocarbon contains in the air of large cities.

When studying fish that have become unwitting participants in the oil spill, scientists have determined the influence of crystalline hydrocarbon phenanthrene on the cardiovascular system. The result of the study showed a similar effect on the human body.

The authors of the study remind us that phenanthrene is present almost everywhere where there are internal combustion engines and petroleum products generally. It would be logical to monitor the emission and its content in the air to determine the level of influence on the human body. In the USA studies have shown that the yearly victims of vehicle emission has become 49 000 people.

Phenanthrene is also used in the manufacture of dyes and explosives.
