“Trump has betrayed Russia”, “in vain praised and hoped for,” “America again the enemy” comments of this kind flooded the social network. The root cause is the statement of the official White house spokesman Sean Spicer that his boss “expects the Russian government will deal with the de-escalation of violence in Ukraine and return the Crimea”. But is it really?
You should start by stressing an important caveat – such a “disappointment” in Donald trump show, mainly those who were not initially charmed by him, calling on Hillary Clinton to “come and rule over” the United States and the world.
“Some of the citizens expectations about trump really been overstated”
Meanwhile, nothing new neither spicey nor trump said. As a presidential candidate, the Republican has never said that he considers the Russian Crimea. Responding to a question about whether he recognized the affiliation of Crimea to Russia and ready to raise the issue of lifting the sanctions, trump replied: “We will examine this question.”
On Wednesday, he also reminded that the Crimea became part of Russia under President Obama. And again nothing new. Trump it in every way and was emphasized during the election race.
It is clear that the process of “scrutiny” is still – and will last until the first official meeting of American and Russian presidents, which many in the world are still waiting for breakthrough solutions. But even if the apparent breakthrough would not scary – it really Moscow and doesn’t count.
And Vladimir Putin himself, and his press Secretary, Dmitry Peskov, and other official speakers repeatedly said that the fundamental difference between Donald trump, Hillary Clinton ready to listen to Russia. The democratic candidate was clearly identified position at which Moscow refused the right to have their own goals, different from the us.
Thus, to say something definite about the position of the trump in the Crimea and the sanctions currently nothing more than speculation. And Russia is well aware.
“The possibility of a reset in Russian-American relations is not crossed, – considers the head of the Duma Committee on international Affairs Leonid Slutsky. But statements by the press Secretary of the President show that the inertial flywheel, promoted in Washington against Russia, yet not stopped.”
“It (the statement on Crimea and Ukraine – OPINION) was made to relieve tension, to show that he (trump – LOOK) is not as Pro-Russian as it may seem, to muffle discontent, which is about him in the American establishment,” – says the Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on defense and security Viktor Ozerov.
The first Deputy head of the international Committee of the Federation Council Vladimir dzhabarov noted that the US President is likely to is no personal position on Ukraine and Crimea, as in the state Department still has not replaced the old team, which prepares for the President information on the topic.
The official representative of the foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova recalled: “my territory is not returned. Crimea is the territory of the Russian Federation”. Press Secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov made a similar statement, noting that the theme of the return of the Peninsula is not negotiable and will not be discussed with foreign partners.
Finally, the speaker of the state Duma Vyacheslav Volodin has declared “to Interfax”: “we will Wait for the direct words of the President of the United States. And generally it is necessary to proceed from the execution of the election software. US residents chose trump because he started talking about the need to end conflicts in Syria, Libya, to resolve the situation with Iraq to fight terrorism, to build relations with Russia, with China. If he refuses their pre-election commitments is a question of to him.”
Thus, the joy of Ukrainian politicians and their sympathizers on this side of the border is somewhat premature. Spicer said nothing fundamental different from pre-election statements of trump. His comment is just a statement that the foreign policy of the United States will change gradually with resistance to the serious part of the establishment – both democratic and Republican.
But even if trump at a meeting with Putin openly, as he likes to say, “Vladimir, we strongly disagree with the fact that Crimea is Russia” in the context of further political and economic relations it does not mean anything. Washington has not recognized the Baltic republics of the USSR and the Cuban missile crisis, and during the “discharge”, under Mikhail Gorbachev, although the level of relations between the two countries in this period varied considerably. It is significant, it would seem that the disagreement did not prevent our countries to agree on really basic issues, to reduce armaments, to implement joint space programs and to sign economic agreements of varying scope.
And despite the fact that then between the two countries were serious ideological differences. Now these discrepancies not: both Russia and the USA – the capitalist state with a democratic social system. Points of contact we have many more than reasons for disengagement, and almost all major countries have such issues, which they will never agree with each other. Sometimes even outright hostility does not prevent countries to be in the same military-political blocs, like, say, Greece and Turkey.
Perhaps the only thing one can partly agree with the participants ostentatious hysteria around Crimea, it’s the fact that some of the citizens expectations about trump really been overstated. But it is a problem of the citizens themselves, not Moscow, Washington, and Simferopol.
The US will always be its own, different from Russian interests regardless of who sits in the White house. The difference is that visionary leaders understand Russia has its own interests, and their delimitation need to negotiate in the interests of peace and international stability. But to put pressure on Russia and even more so to threaten it with military force is pointless and dangerous.
