“For the first time in the post-Soviet period the present evaluated more positively than the past, there was an important psychological turning point,” political scientists comment on the results of very interesting polls, zameriava the attitude of Russians to the conditions of life under different rulers. The Brezhnev era has lost the first place. What is the reason?
On Tuesday, the “Levada-Center” published the results of a survey which asked Russians to rate different forms of government in the country over the last century and say, when life in Russia was better. The question was asked in the wording: “In the last 100 years in our country, there were various forms of government, as you believe, when life in Russia was better?” The occasion was the century of the February revolution.
We will note that earlier the Russians with greater warmth belonged to the Brezhnev period. For example, in 2006, according to a survey of Fund “Public opinion” in General, 61% of citizens are kindly remembered the Brezhnev era, and among respondents aged 36 to 54 years this assessment gave 75% of the respondents.
By the way, the same effects of the February revolution, the Russians estimate is ambiguous. A fifth of respondents (21%) believes that “the collapse of the monarchy led Russia on the path of losing their national and state grandeur.” At the same time increased the share of those (from 9% in 2012 to 13% now), who believes the fall of the monarchy a progressive step in the development of the country. Another 23% say that “positive and negative consequences of the collapse of the monarchy compensate each other”.
Deputy Director of “Levada-Center” Alexei Grazhdankin said that in the Brezhnev era the welfare of people reached a maximum value in the entire history of the USSR. Then after a dip in the 90s, closer to 2008, this level is actually recovered. “Accordingly, people perceive these two as the best of the era, depending on, the older this generation or the youth. They give a small preference for either the Brezhnev period, or Putin. Now this number of people is almost equal,” said Grazhdankin newspaper VIEW.
According to the sociologist, many of the older generation associated with Brezhnev’s own youth, but there are young people who also vote in favor of those times.
“Indeed, people can perceive the Brezhnev era as more prosperous. They are psychologically associated with it, is perceived as more comfortable. In addition, it is clear that in the zero range of goods and services has become much broader than in the Soviet era. Therefore, the current times have many advantages over the Brezhnev era”, – he explained.
Grazhdankin has explained why, over time, fans Brezhnev becomes smaller. According to him, the past measurements were carried out before, “how did Putin’s time.” “So the idea of Golden time Russia has changed so much in recent years”, – concluded the Deputy Director.
In turn, the member of the expert Council of the Institute of socio-economic and political studies (ISAPI) Alexei Zudin, too, notes that previous polls have shown: most favorably evaluated by society primarily the period of Leonid Brezhnev.
“For the first time in the post-Soviet period the present evaluated more positively than the past. In itself this change is very important from the point of view of the attitude of society. And people positively assess the current quality of life even when the economy is not in the best condition. Statistics and polls indicate a marked decline in real income, reducing consumption. In addition, the geopolitical situation around Russia is extremely complicated. Nevertheless obtained such favorable results,” said Zudin the newspaper VIEW.
According to experts, when the society had evaluated the pros and cons of Putin’s rule, very often the solution to domestic social and economic problems “visibly losing the advantages of foreign policy.”
“Now citizens have a more realistic assessment of the way in socio-economic development and in improving the quality of life that took place in the last 16 years. We can say that the dynamics of quality of life, public opinion began to show realism. Before people would be afraid to admit that life really improved. Now this important psychological change has occurred”, – the expert believes.
“We need to remember that this is a subjective assessment. People tend to forget about the negative, about the bad. Positive evaluations of the Brezhnev period adds contrast compare what happened with the USSR in the period of perestroika and Russia in the 90s. From the Brezhnev period was the negative side of that with more power said about himself and came to the surface in the restructuring, however, the period from the point of view of the standard of living is considered the most positive in Soviet history,” – summed up Alexei Zudin.
